On the Use of Things

I have been carrying a lot of things around with me for as long as I can remember, which people now call "EDC", every day carry. There was no acronym back then, but as a teenager I already wore an old army ammunition pouch on my belt, packed according to Rüdiger Nehberg's specifications for a survival belt.

One interim state of it even made it onto a website about the subject.

Lately I have been thinking more about what each individual item actually does for me, and whether I can really do everything on demand that one could do with it (and really do it, just like that).

Because only what you can do without looking it up will help you when it matters.

On top of that, everything you own needs attention:
– the torch in your pocket has to be recharged regularly.
– the fountain pen tends to dry out if it isn't used all the time.
– hay fever tablets expire and have to be replaced.

I have also found that I worry more when I keep thinking about what I might need for which situation. And whether I might pass somewhere today where I wouldn't be allowed to have a Leatherman multitool with me.

So now I am reducing. I will report back.
