Speaker: Prof. Dr. Markus Pfeil, physicist and magician. He is the Senate Commissioner for Sustainable Development at RWU and teaches in the field of embedded systems. In his free time he makes music and performs magic at the Magischer Zirkel von Deutschland.

Short description:
You would think they are completely different. Science is serious, and magic is mere entertainment. But if you look closely, perhaps not. Science tries to understand what goes on in the world. If we understand exactly how the world works, we can invent new technical devices that do things that were impossible until then. Magic shows us things that are actually impossible, and thereby challenges us to question our explanation of the world.
The workshop is meant to show what science actually is, how it works and how it helps us separate right from wrong. In contrast, we try to understand what makes magic what it is, how magicians baffle us, and why we often learn something important about the world in the process. During the workshop you will both prepare and carry out a scientific experiment of your own and learn and perform a magic trick.
